The Regional and Sectoral Transitions Research program aims to create and disseminate knowledge informing the rapid, orderly and just phase-out of coal production. The program brings together a wide range of Australian and German researchers with extensive expertise and experience in applied research on coal transition policy challenges and priorities.
Research priorities include:
- Strengthening understanding the speed and scale of coal phase out required to achieve global and national emission reduction targets
- Clarifying and communicating coal transition trends, drivers and scenarios at global, national and regional levels
- Identifying policy challenges and priority responses for:
- Accelerating the phase-out of coal fired power generation
- Protecting energy security and affordability
- Creating a just transition for vulnerable workers and communities
- Strengthening economic and employment outcomes
- Securing resources required for financing the coal transition
- Building public support for accelerating the just and well managed phase out of coal
