The Australian-German Energy Symposium brought together senior members of government, policy, industry, research and community sectors. It was hosted by the Australian Department of the Environment and Energy (DoEE), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The Australian-German Energy Transition Hub, the Berlin based think tank Adelphi and the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce supported the Symposium’s conception and organisation. 

The Symposium focused on the transition of the Australian and German energy sectors, which is being driven by technical, economic, climatic and policy trends.

Both Germany and Australia aim to secure reliability, emission reductions and economic efficiency in their power supply. These imperatives also apply to decarbonising other sectors and transforming industrial processes. The Symposium reflected on the approaches in both countries in seeking to achieve these goals.

The first day concentrated on the power sector and on energy policies. The second day put an emphasis on broader transition issues, investment requirements and opportunities across sectors, with a particular focus on the role of hydrogen and synthetic fuels, energy and emissions intensive industries, and export opportunities in the transition to a net-zero emissions global economy.
